Panga Tours

Take our Ponga Tour through the mangroves or through Golfito Bay for sight-seeing, bird and sea life watching, or a little fishing and swimming. A Ponga (or “panga”)is a Costa Rican “skiff”; a very stable, sea-worthy, open “semi-dory” type. The mangrove tour is a real life jungle cruise that includes a visit to a black sand beach for a swim. On the Golfito Bay cruise you will see resorts, boats, beaches and islands. Learn the history of Golfito including the years with the United Fruit Company and the Deposito Libre Comercial de Golfito. View and hear the sounds of the jungle as Captain Craig takes you by the Refugio Nacional de Vida Silvestre Golfito and or the Piedras Blancas National Park . If a land hike is requested, the Captain can arrange a rainforest or jungle tour. On these tours you may catch sight of monkeys, coatis, toucans, hummingbirds, wild cats and scarlet macaws. A quick ride across the Golfo Dulce provides a visit to Puerto Jiménez and the entrance to the Corcovado National Park, a lowland tropical rainforest. The Corcovado is said to be “the most biologically intense place on Earth”.

You grew up with the theme park jungle cruise – now experience the adventure of a life-time on a real-life jungle cruise. Travel through the mangroves from Golfito Bay through the La Trocha to Zancudo Beach to experience a beautiful black sand Costa Rican beach. Swim in the warm Costa Rican surf to catch a few waves whether body surfing or surfboarding to enjoy your complete jungle experience. You may catch a sight of a Sloth, Roseate Spoonbill (Platalea ajaja) only pink bird in Costa Rica, Scarlet Macaw (Ara macao), Mangrove Hummingbird, Amazilia boucardi and be lucky enough to see a Crocodile or Boa Constrictor. After all this ecological-nature adventure settle down to a refreshing, thirst-quenching tropical libation and typical meal at one of the local Costa Rican resorts. All this adventure is waiting for you to enjoy. Join us to experience Haiku’s Ponga tour.

On another ponga adventure Captain Craig will circumnavigate the calm waters of Golfito Bay enabling you to see the views. You are able to see Golfito from the “outside in”. Some of the sights include: local resorts with boats at their docks, the local fishing fleet and fish market, Playa de Cacao, the mangroves, the bay islands with nesting birds, and a local vinca (farm). These tours are especially appealing in the early morning quiet (except for the cry of the Howler monkeys!) or the stillness of evening. During the evening ride you may have a chance to see the monkeys playing in the trees before you catch the sun setting behind the Osa peninsula. Trips on Golfito Bay are a way to enjoy a refreshing breeze during the heat of the day or the warmth of a beautiful tropical evening. A stop for refreshing libation at a resort or Playa de Cacao is always a treat. During a sunset ride enjoy a tropical sundowner while watching the explosion of colors in the sky.
